Addictive Sesame Chicken

Omaha Moves Here isn’t all real estate, all the time. We have a life, just like you do, and part of our purpose is making life more fun with some of our home cooked creations as well as homeowner tips and DIY. This Sesame Chicken is one recipe that our kids love, but it’s a toss-up between this and General Tso’s Chicken. While the ingredient list may appear daunting, it is really easy to put together—cut the marinade time to 15 minutes for a 45-minute meal.

Ingredients
2 T soy sauce
1 T sherry cooking wine
1 teaspoon dark sesame oil (or toasted)
2 T flour
2 T cornstarch
2 T water
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon canola oil
1.5 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1” cubes
48 oz canola oil for frying (more or less depending on if you use a fryer or skillet)
1/2 cup water
1 cup chicken broth
1/4 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1 cup white sugar
2 T soy sauce
2 T dark sesame oil (or toasted)
1 T red chile paste or sambal oelek
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 T toasted sesame seeds

Directions
Combine the 2 tablespoons soy sauce, sherry cooking wine, 1 teaspoon of sesame oil, 2 tablespoons flour, 2 tablespoons cornstarch, 2 tablespoons water, baking powder, baking soda, and canola oil in a large bowl. Mix well then stir in chicken. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes, stirring halfway through marinade time.

While chicken marinades, heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan to 375 degrees F.

Combine the 1/2 cup water, chicken broth, vinegar, 1/4 cup cornstarch, sugar, 2 tablespoons soy sauce, 2 tablespoons sesame oil, red chili paste or sambal oelek, and garlic in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly. Turn heat to low and keep warm, stirring occasionally.

Fry the marinated chicken in batches until cooked through and golden brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Drain on paper towels. (if using a fryer with a basket, make sure to jiggle the basket so the chicken doesn’t stick to the bottom)

Serve chicken over rice and top with desired amount of sauce then sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Optional
For a sweeter sauce, use 2 tablespoons of vinegar instead of 1/4 cup.

Steamed Broccoli and Egg Rolls (I always ditch the sauce that comes with the egg rolls and combine 2 T orange marmalade and 2 T red chile paste or sambal oelek. If you’ve got time, it’s always fun to make your own egg rolls, message me for the recipe.
